In the Pop Art movement, Andy Warhol was a leading figure. Warhol's commercial icons made him one of the most famous artists of his time. In Pittsburgh, he was born on August 6, 1928, and graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949. Warhol worked for magazines like Vogue and Glamour after moving to New York to pursue a commercial illustration career. Though he was a gay man, he kept his personal life private, and on occasions, Warhol referenced his sexuality through art. A studio loft on East 47th street in Midtown Manhattan was known as The Factory after Warhol rented it in 1964. He used The Factory as a center for actors, models and artists who became the foundation for his prints and films. It was also used as a performance venue, and during the 1980s Warhol teamed up with multiple younger artists. Sadly, Warhol passed away at 58 after complications from a routine gall bladder surgery on February 22, 1987, in New York. His estate became The Andy Warhol Foundation after his death and a museum in honour of him and his oeuvre opened in his Pittsburgh.
