~COMPOSITION~

Updated: Oct 19, 2021

WHAT IS COMPOSITION

Composition refers to the placement of elements within the frame. This means being mindful of what will be photographed, how it is placed with other objects in the image and how well your subject is expressed. Good composition uses different rules and techniques, not in a controlling way, but as a guideline. Some of the most important "rules" are:

Rule of Thirds

The image is divided into thirds, as shown in the photo. If the image's main subjects lie on or near the line, then the image tends to look "right".

Rule of Odd & Even

An even number of subjects in the photograph creates a feeling of tension or may look slightly un-natural from time to time. In contrast, an odd number of "things" can frequently generate a sense of harmony or balance.

Triangles

Triangles have three sides and tend to shape a solid and stable composition.

Space

The space in the image on the right creates a contemplative or thoughtful feel to it.

Space can also help create movement. In one image, there isn't much-unfilled space. In the other photo, the swimmers now look like they are moving into space in fount of them.

Symmetry

The building seems to be "balanced" by the white cloud. The line of symmetry runs from the bottom left to the top right corner.

Patter & Repetition

When something is repeated, it can create a visual pattern, texture or an abstract visual experience.

MY WORK

In this image, the person is in the centre of the frame and is "balanced" by the poles on the bottom right and top left corners.

In these two images, symmetry is also seen. The horizontal lines on the wall create leading lines towards the model. Simultaneously, the other lines frame and draw the viewers eyes to the model and create symmetry in the photo.

The model creates a triangle shape with her hands, and in the background, there are also triangles (three triangles) to the right. The pattern aspect of the photo is seen in the background. The multiple colours also show a pattern. The space between her hands and face gives the impression that she is blocking the sun, which follows the Space rule. Her arms also create leading lines that move your eyes to move across the photo.

This photo shows patterns behind the model with multiple different colours. Vertical lines are going through the colourful background that also creates lines that draw your eyes up the image. There are no other distinctive rules done in this photo, but it can be referred to as "Asymmetrical" (when an image has no symmetry).
