Larry Clark

Updated: Oct 19, 2021

Larry Clark was born in Tulsa and studied photography at the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee Wisconsin from the year 1961 to 1963. He has been a freelance photographer based in New York since 1966. During the 1960s Larry documented the ways of drug use and the illegal activities of his friends in Tulsa, and his photographs were published as Tulsa in 1971 and launched Larry's career. He produced Teenage Lust in 1983, Larry Clark in 1992 and The Perfect Childhood in 1993 after Tulsa. He was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Photographers' Fellowship in 1973 and a Creative Arts Public Service photographers' grant in 1980. He has also produced films based on his experiences with New York City teenagers and their usage of drugs, alcohol and sex.

Larry Clark's photographs in Tulsa are resolute portrayals of difficult and mostly ill-favoured circumstances viewed through a participant's eyes. His recent photography addresses similar subjects, but with the distance of an observer, and a more prominent formal sensibility.

In this image, you can see a woman to the right, squeezing some form of liquid out of a needle. In contrast, a guy is on the left is facing her holding a needle. From the look of the background, it seems like they are inside a kitchen.

Having the woman in the middle ground in focus and everything else blurred creates depth, and our eyes go straight to the woman. The guy's arm also leads you to her.

Judging based off of the topics Clark does, I would say he took this picture to show viewers his perspective. Showing how some people may take drugs or the effects of it, is most likely the reason for this image.

The image doesn't connect with any of the topics I am doing, but the fact that it is in black and white help. The tone in the image helps me gauge how bright or dark I would like my future photos.

I do like the depth and tone of the image, which is also the picture strength. I'm not too fond of the graininess of the image, however.
