Passive Framing:

Passive framing is when interest is created outside of the frame


In this image, your eyes immediately go towards the man walking out of the frame. This is a great example of passive framing. Even though the lady is in the centre of the frame, you wonder where the man is going and not what the lady is doing.




Some other examples of Passive Framing:


Active Framing:

Active framing is when the viewer is drawn into the image and concentrates on one main thing.



In this image, your eyes are drawn to the top of the bin's cover. The lines in the background and the light going across carries your eyes down and on to the bin cover.
